Mr. King's personal touches abound on this impeccable guitar
When B.B. King was playing ES-335s and 355s, he used to stuff the f-holes to eliminate feedback. So when it came time to design his own dream guitar, his first request was to get rid of those f-holes, which Gibson was happy to do. Another touch is the special fine-tuner tailpiece. Gibson has had a few similar tailpieces through the years, but this one is the best of the lot. Finally, B. B. decided he wanted to keep the six-position Varitone rotary switch, which essentially rolls off highs in a quite different way than by using the standard tone control. Add an Ebony finish and you've got the King's guitar!
Not too fat, not too thin: this might well be your ideal neck profile
No, we're not talking about the latest fad diet, we're talking about Lucille's special rounded neck profile. This fast, satisfying neck occupies a nice middle ground. It's not super chunky like those huge '58 Les Paul necks, but neither is it as thin as Gibson's '60s "slim taper" neck profiles. In any case, the combination of a comfortable maple neck and a Richlite fingerboard with pearl block inlays gives you buttery playability. Go ahead - let your fingers dance a bit. If you're like us guitarists here at Sweetwater, you'll find "Lucille" quite addictive.
490R and 490T humbuckers give you a massive arsenal of tone
You want fat, snarling tone that's perfect for blues and rock? The Gibson Memphis B.B. King Signature serves it up, big time. But Gibson's 490T and 490R humbuckers are also seriously versatile. Gibson voiced these pups for tonal characteristics similar to their '57 Classics, but with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary humbucker sound. From chimey cleans to searing shred (and everything in between), these pickups reward your touch with world-class responsiveness. Perfect for blues and rock, sure - but equally proficient at jazz and just about any flavor of fusion you might be into.
